What the health tourism series measures
Health tourism, in the Turkish statistical system, is a category inside the quarterly tourism income statistics published by the Turkish Statistical Institute. It counts visitors who state that receiving health services was the purpose of their visit, and estimates the expenditure associated with those visits. It is an economic series, not a clinical register, and it does not identify which facility treated a given visitor.
What the 2025 annual total shows
The Service Exporters' Association reported 1,398,580 health tourism visitors and 3.022 billion dollars of revenue for 2025. Press coverage in April 2026 compared this with about 1.5 million patients and more than 3 billion dollars in 2024, describing the change as a decline of roughly 7 per cent. Sector representatives quoted in that coverage attributed the fall to negative publicity in source markets, and separately set a 2026 target of 2.5 million visitors and 10 billion dollars. Targets stated by a trade body are commercial ambitions rather than statistical outputs, and this publication treats them as such.
What changed in the first quarter of 2026
The quarterly figures give a sharper picture than the annual headline. In the first quarter of 2026, 302,487 people visited Türkiye for health services, against 354,457 in the same quarter of 2025, a fall of approximately 14.7 per cent. Revenue moved in the opposite direction, rising from 643,356,000 dollars to 761,523,000 dollars, an increase of approximately 18.4 per cent. Fewer visitors therefore produced more revenue.
The same period saw total tourism income of 9,896,456,000 dollars, up 4.2 per cent year on year, meaning health tourism accounted for a small single-digit share of tourism income that quarter.
Why revenue rose while visitor numbers fell
The arithmetic is contained in the per-visitor figure. Average health tourism revenue per visitor rose from approximately 1,815 dollars in the first quarter of 2025 to approximately 2,518 dollars in the first quarter of 2026, an increase of roughly 39 per cent. The Service Exporters' Association described this as evidence that Türkiye is attracting higher value-added treatment rather than simply higher volumes.
Two readings of the same number are available and the published data does not separate them. A higher average spend can reflect a shift in case mix towards longer or more complex treatment. It can equally reflect price movements in dollar terms across the same treatment mix. Distinguishing between these would require treatment-level data that the tourism income series does not contain.
Which markets the visitors come from
The Service Exporters' Association reported in July 2026 that Türkiye receives health tourists from approximately 180 countries, and named Germany, the United Kingdom, Iraq, Azerbaijan, Russia, Libya and the Gulf states among the largest source markets. It also reported growing demand from Central Asia and described a sector of more than 1,500 health care institutions across more than 40 cities. These are association-reported operational figures rather than statistical institute outputs, and they are recorded here at that weight.
Where dental treatment sits within the total
Dental treatment is consistently named among the most requested categories, alongside aesthetic and plastic surgery, hair transplantation, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, cardiology and bariatric surgery. No published breakdown in these releases assigns a visitor count or a revenue figure to dentistry specifically. Any statement giving a precise dental share of the 1,398,580 visitors or the 3.022 billion dollars is not supported by the sources cited on this page.

Limitations: what this data does not establish
The visitor and expenditure figures are compiled from a quarterly survey of departing visitors, not from clinic records. Survey-based estimates carry sampling error, and a visitor who travels primarily for a holiday and receives treatment during the trip may be classified differently from one who travels expressly for treatment.
Definitions also differ between the bodies publishing on this subject. The statistical institute counts visits and expenditure, the Ministry of Health administers facility authorisation and holds a different population of records, and trade associations publish operational counts supplied by members. Figures from these three sources are not interchangeable, and small discrepancies between them are expected rather than anomalous.
Revenue is reported in US dollars while the underlying transactions occur largely in Turkish lira, so exchange rate movement affects the dollar series independently of any change in treatment volume or in lira prices. A rise in dollar revenue per visitor is not by itself evidence of a change in what was clinically delivered.
Finally, none of these figures speaks to treatment outcomes. Visitor counts and revenue totals describe an economy. They do not describe complication rates, revision rates, patient satisfaction or the quality of any individual facility.
Frequently asked questions
How many health tourists visited Türkiye in 2025?
The Service Exporters' Association reported 1,398,580 health tourism visitors and 3.022 billion US dollars of revenue for 2025, in a statement carried by Anadolu Agency in July 2026.
Did health tourism to Türkiye grow or shrink in early 2026?
Both, depending on the measure. Visitor numbers fell approximately 14.7 per cent in the first quarter of 2026 against the same quarter of 2025, while revenue rose approximately 18.4 per cent.
How much does a health tourist spend on average?

No. Dental treatment is named among the most requested categories, but the releases do not break visitor numbers or revenue down by treatment type.
